Pennsylvania Game Commission Conducts Mock CWD Drill to Test Preparedness

Pennsylvania Game Commission officials are in the midst of a full-blown emergency situation involving suspected cases of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in seven areas of the state! Of course, it isn't real; it is a series of simulation exercises to test the Game Commission's emergency preparedness to review the effectiveness of the agency's CWD response plan.

On Nov. 11, Game Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe announced that the agency would conduct a CWD response drill in the first quarter of 2007. The decision to hold the drill was a product of two meetings to review and update the state's response plan, as well as the agency's internal operational plan.

"Currently, there are no confirmed or suspected cases of CWD-infected deer or elk in Pennsylvania, and this is one more thing we are doing to ensure that it stays that way," Roe said.

Fashion show celebrates everyday beauty

Dressed in silk-lined pastoral vestments and a colorful stoll, The Rev. Dr. Nancy Turner glided down the runway at the University Center. The pastor and psychologist, with short graying hair, represented her own age, size and profession in the Empowering Everyday Angels fashion show.

Megan Vaughan, a senior nursing student, wore one of her favorite outfits: tailored khaki pants, suspenders and an embroidered white business shirt. Her brown curls bounced around a bright-toothed, red lip-sticked smile.

These were not the women University of Northern Colorado freshman Ashley Cahill expected to see Monday night. She and her two roommates came to the event as part of a women's studies assignment. They thought there would be fashion, but instead found feminists, wearing everyday outfits that exuded confidence and individual beauty.

Small gland in your neck can have big effect on your well-being

Perhaps you have not thought about your thyroid, the butterfly-shaped gland that rests in the middle of the lower part of your neck, just below your Adam's apple.

But the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and the American Thyroid Association urge you to take note.
